Advanced Optical Design

The QSFP28 100G ER4 transceiver utilizes four LAN-Wavelength Division Multiplexing (LWDM) lanes, each operating at 25.78 Gbps with NRZ modulation. The transmitter employs high-power EML (Electro-absorption Modulated Laser) arrays, paired with a highly sensitive APD (Avalanche Photodiode) receiver. This advanced optical design provides the enhanced power budget necessary to overcome signal attenuation over 30 to 40 kilometers of standard single-mode fiber, all while maintaining excellent signal integrity. The four optical signals are multiplexed onto a single duplex LC connector, ensuring efficient fiber utilization.

 

Standards Compliance and Reliability

Fully compliant with the IEEE 802.3ba 100GBASE-ER4 standard, as well as QSFP28 MSA and SFF-8665/8636 specifications, this module guarantees seamless interoperability with all major networking equipment. It operates from a single 3.3V power supply with a maximum power consumption of 5W, striking a balance between high performance and energy efficiency. With a case temperature range of 0°C to 70°C, it is suitable for controlled data center and central office environments.

Q: What is the practical difference between this ER4 and a much more expensive ZR4 or coherent optics module?

A: This is an important distinction. ER4 (this module): Uses direct-detection technology (simple on/off light pulses) and is ideal for distances up to 40km. It is cost-effective and widely used in metro and large campus networks. ZR4/Coherent Modules: Use advanced coherent technology (modulating light's phase) to reach 80km to 120km+ without amplification, or thousands of kilometers with amplifiers. They are significantly more expensive and used for long-haul service provider and submarine cables. Choose ER4 for your 40km needs; choose coherent for anything significantly longer.

Q: Can it be used in industrial environments?
