The MCQ-4NSCLC-40 is a 100G QSFP28 ER4 optical transceiver built for extended‑reach 100‑Gigabit Ethernet connections over single‑mode fiber. It supports link distances up to 30 km without an FEC bypass and reaches 40 km in standard ER4 applications, making it a practical fit for metro access and long‑haul enterprise interconnects.

Operating from a single 3.3 V supply, the transceiver consumes a maximum of 5 W and maintains reliable performance across a case temperature range of 0 °C to 70 °C. Inside, four cooled EML transmitters combined with high‑sensitivity APD receivers deliver an aggregated 100 Gbps data stream, divided into four independent 25.78 Gb/s NRZ lanes. Optical multiplexing follows the LAN WDM grid, ensuring efficient use of fiber infrastructure through a standard LC duplex connector.

Electrical and optical modulation both adhere to 4×25.78 Gb/s NRZ signaling, fully aligned with the IEEE 802.3ba 100GBASE‑ER4 specification. The design also incorporates the QSFP28 MSA, SFF‑8665, and SFF‑8636 protocols, guaranteeing seamless interoperability with mainstream switches and routers. On‑board digital diagnostics, accessible via the I2C management interface, provide real‑time monitoring of temperature, supply voltage, laser bias current, and optical power levels-giving network operators the visibility needed for proactive maintenance.

FAQ

Q: What is the maximum distance the QSFP 100G ER can cover?

A: The module is rated for up to 40 kilometers over standard single-mode fiber (SMF). In many network designs, it is also used for stable 30 km links without relying on host FEC correction, giving you flexibility for both metro rings and longer campus connections.

Q: How does this compare to a standard 100G QSFP28 LR4?

A: The primary difference is reach. LR4 optics typically cover distances up to 10 km. The ER4 version includes a cooled EML transmitter and a more sensitive APD receiver, allowing it to push the signal reliably up to 40 km without the need for additional amplification or dispersion compensation.

Q: Is the power consumption high?

A: The QSFP 100G ER module has a maximum power consumption of 5 watts. This is well within the standard envelope for long-reach 100G optics and should not pose any cooling or power budget issues in modern enterprise or data center hardware.

Q: What are the typical use cases for a 40 km 100G optic?

A: Common deployments include connecting data centers across a city metro area, linking enterprise campuses with separate buildings several miles apart, or extending service provider aggregation networks.
