The QSFP28 100G DR1 marks a deliberate shift in 100G optical design, moving away from four‑lane parallel optics toward a clean, single‑lambda architecture. This QSFP28‑compliant module is built around a hermetically sealed TO package that houses a 1311nm cooled EML laser and a PIN receiver, delivering full 100G throughput over a single pair of standard single‑mode fiber.

The electrical side retains the familiar CAUI‑4 interface, running four lanes at 25.78Gb/s NRZ to maintain backward compatibility with existing 100G host equipment. Inside the module, a DSP‑based gearbox converts those four electrical lanes into a single 53.125GBd PAM4 optical signal at 106.25Gb/s aggregate data rate. On the receive path, the process reverses: the incoming 100G PAM4 optical signal is converted back to four 25G NRZ electrical lanes for the host.

Performance is tightly controlled. The module supports up to 500 meters of transmission on G.652 single‑mode fiber, with on‑board KP4 FEC termination handling forward error correction internally. Power consumption is capped at 4W maximum from a single 3.3V supply, and the case temperature range spans 0°C to 70°C. A two‑wire serial interface with digital diagnostic monitoring (DDM) provides real‑time access to transceiver operating parameters, compliant with SFF‑8636 Rev 2.10a.

The duplex LC connector keeps cabling simple and familiar, unlike MPO‑based parallel optics. The QSFP 100G DR1 is fully compliant with IEEE802.3cu 100GBASE‑DR, QSFP28 MSA, and RoHS standards. It is also Class 1 laser safety certified.

For data center operators moving toward higher port densities, the QSFP 100G DR1 offers a forward‑looking single‑wavelength path without breaking compatibility with existing NRZ‑based switch infrastructure.

FAQ

Q: How do I store unused modules?

A: Keep them in the original anti‑static bag, inside a closed box away from moisture and direct sunlight. Ideal storage temperature is 0‑40°C. Always put the dust plug back into the LC port. Do not stack heavy items on top. This prevents dust and ESD damage.
