QSFP+ 40G LR4
This QSFP+ 40G LR4 optical transceiver is engineered to deliver reliable, high-bandwidth connectivity for demanding network environments requiring extended reach.
Applications
This QSFP+ 40G LR4 transceiver is ideally suited for a wide range of high-speed networking scenarios. It enables cost-effective 40GBASE-LR4 Ethernet links for rack-to-rack connections within large data centers, high-capacity uplinks between data center switches and routers, and extended metro network aggregation. Its ability to deliver 40G performance over 10km makes it a versatile building block for enterprises, cloud service providers, and telecommunications carriers seeking to scale their infrastructure efficiently.
Features
The transceiver employs advanced 4-channel Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM) technology. It multiplexes four independent optical lanes-each operating at data rates up to 11.2 Gbps-onto a single pair of standard single-mode fibers via a duplex LC connector, achieving an aggregate bandwidth exceeding 40 Gbps while dramatically improving fiber utilization. Fully compliant with the IEEE 802.3ba and 40GBASE-LR4 standards, it ensures seamless interoperability. Its compact, hot-pluggable QSFP+ form factor enables high-density deployments, and operation within the standard 0°C to 70°C range guarantees stable performance in controlled environments.
FAQ
Q1: What makes this LR4 module different from a 40G SR4 module that uses MPO connectors?
A1: The fundamental difference lies in fiber utilization and transmission distance. The SR4 module uses parallel optics, requiring 8 fibers (4 pairs) with an MPO connector for very short distances (up to 100-150m). This LR4 module uses CWDM technology to combine four optical signals onto just 2 fibers via a standard LC duplex connector, achieving a much longer reach of 10 kilometers. It's designed for extended-distance links where fiber conservation is critical.
Q2: My link distance is only 3 kilometers. Can I still use this 10km-rated module?
A2: Yes, absolutely. Using a module rated for a longer distance than your actual link is completely safe and common practice. It provides a healthy optical power budget margin, meaning the signal arrives stronger than necessary, which can actually improve link stability and resilience against connector aging or minor fiber degradation. Just ensure your actual distance does not exceed 10km.
Q3: We are planning a link between two buildings approximately 8km apart. Besides the modules, what else should we test before deployment?
A3: For an 8km mission-critical link, we strongly recommend:
End-to-End Link Loss Test: Use an optical power meter and light source to measure the total loss of the entire fiber path (including all connectors, splices, and the cable itself). Ensure this measured loss is well within the module's receiver sensitivity range (typically around -21dBm or better).
Fiber Inspection: Use a fiber microscope to inspect and meticulously clean all connector end-faces before connection. A single dirty connector is the leading cause of failure in long-haul links.
